JANESVILLE—The remains of an antique car was among the debris after a fire destroyed a large garage on Janesville's southwest side Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were dispatched at 7:40 a.m. to 2828 W. Rockport Road and remained on the scene for about three hours, said Janesville Fire Department Cmdr. Scott Morovits.

No injuries were reported, and Morovits said the 100-foot by 35-foot garage and its contents, including a 1951 Ford, were destroyed.

While damage estimates are not complete, Morovits said the cause of the fire appears to be a wood-burning stove in the shop area of the garage.

Morovits said a passerby on Rockport Road noticed smoke coming from the garage and stopped to alert someone at the residence in front of the garage. The tenant, Craig Dennis, went to investigate, noticed smoke coming through the eaves, and called 911, Morovits said.

The Footville Fire Department assisted with a tender truck and two firefighters.

The Janesville Transit System supplied a bus for firefighters to warm themselves in the frigid conditions. A neighboring business, Rod's Auto, also opened itself to firefighters, Morovits said.

Morovits said Tom Lynch of Janesville owns the garage.
