Host Brookfield Catholic Memorial capitalized early in overtime to beat the Janesville Bluebirds at the Joe Raymond Memorial Holiday Hockey Classic on Friday.

The Bluebirds, Janesville’s co-op boys hockey team, took a penalty to open the overtime session, and Brookfield’s co-op team scored one minute in for a 5-4 victory.

“It’s about as even of a game as you get,” Janesville coach John Mauermann said. “But when we didn’t pressure them, they stretched the ice out and got behind us. We did some pretty good things but got outscored at the end.”

Janesville fell to 5-6-1 overall.

It built a two-goal lead early in the third period when Connor Perkins and Justin Runde scored back-to-back goals to make it 3-1.

But Brookfield Catholic Memorial stormed back with three straight goals, including John Rymaszewski’s second of the day.

Perkins, who also had an assist in the game, scored his second goal on the power play at 14:25 of the third to force overtime.

“We tried to create a play off the opening faceoff but it went against us and we got a penalty,” Mauermann said of the overtime session.

Janesville will close out the tournament with a game at 2 p.m. today.
