BELOIT—A Janesville man is in jail on suspicion that he shot two people in a downtown Beloit parking lot early Sunday, police said.

According to a release, Beloit police arrested Thamar Keithern Harper, 29, of Janesville for first degree attempted homicide after a shooting early Sunday at a municipal parking lot at 325 Broad St. in downtown Beloit.

Beloit Police Capt. Dan Molland said police believe Harper opened fire with a handgun at the parking lot at about 1:41 a.m. Sunday, where a large crowd was gathered. Harper is suspected of shooting two people and injuring them.

One person shot in the incident was treated for bullet wounds at a local hospital and released, and another person was still hospitalized Sunday with gunshot injuries, Molland said.

Police are still trying to unravel what led to the shooting, but Molland said witnesses at the scene were cooperative, and police were able to catch Molland as he was trying to flee the parking lot.

Police believe Harper was the only shooter in the incident, Molland said.

Harper was being held Sunday at the Rock County Jail, pending a court hearing, Molland said.
