Russell M. Steeber, Kellnersville (1927-2013)

Russell M. Steeber age 86, of Kellnersville, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at the Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Kellnersville on June 18, 1927 to the late Michael and Anna (Sladky) Steeber. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade & High School and graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School in 1945. Russ served in the Army/Air Force during World War II in the Philippines. After service he worked at Mercury and US Rubber in California. He then attended St. Norbert College, De Pere before partnering with his brother Richard and his wife Evie Steeber in Steeber’s Store in 1951.
On May 14, 1955 he married Ione Bauer at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Manitowoc. Russ and Ione and Dick and Evie co-owned and operated Steeber’s Store in Kellnersville from 1955 to their retirement in 1992. He was also a Postal Clerk for 40 years and a Notary Public from 1963 to 2011. Russ was actively involved in the community, county and had a passion for preserving the history of Kellnersville. His activities included; Manitowoc County League baseball, Friends of the Branch River, Manitowoc Historical Society, Kubale-O’Connell VFW Post 6179 of Kellnersville where he served in the past as commander, American Legion Drews-Bleser Post #88 of Manitowoc, Old Timers Baseball League where he served as president in the past.
Russ was instrumental in starting the Kellnersville Betterment Association. He was Town of Franklin Clerk for 6 years and Town of Franklin Chairman for 6 years. He served with the Kellnersville Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years and held positions including Assistant Fire Chief and President. Russ served on the Manitowoc County Board for 13 years and held positions with the Law Enforcement committee, Highway commission, and Social Services committee. He served on the Board of Directors for United Grocers for 12 years and was a Board Member of Roundy’s Milwaukee for 3 years. Russ was on the Board for Kellnersville Housing and started the Kellnersville Trailer Park. For many years Russ and his wife Ione hosted Santa for the children of Kellnersville and surrounding area.
Russ will be remembered for his hearty laugh and enjoyed being with people and always had a story or joke to tell. After retirement, he enjoyed collecting and compiling the history of Kellnersville.
Russ is survived by his wife: Ione, Kellnersville; and their 3 children: Beverly (Tim) Lewis, Waupaca; and their children: Jesse (Mary) Lewis of Milwaukee; and Taylor Lewis of La Crosse; Russell (Lauri) Steeber, Janesville; and their children: Bethany Steeber of Madison, Aimee (John Haney) Thomas of Janesville, great grandchildren: Carter & Grace, Molly (Chad) Ellerston of Kenosha, great grandson Kai and Sean Scannell of Madison; Scott Steeber, Janesville. He is further survived by his two sisters and one brother-in-law: Jeannette Zeman, Kellnersville and Carol Mae (Erv) Lambert, Mishicot; three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law: Millie Steeber, CO; Germaine Bauer, Manitowoc; Joe (Glenda) Bauer, ID; Pat (Stan) Hollen, Manitowoc, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: Michael and Anna Steeber; two brothers: Richard Steeber; Donald Steeber; three brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law: Frank Zeman; Richard Bauer; Mildred (Ralph) Bonin.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013 at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH in Kellnersville. The Rev. Ronald Colombo will officiate with entombment of his cremated remains to follow in the Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. Kubale-O’Connell VFW Post #6179 of Kellnersville will accord military rites following the Memorial Service at the church. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in his name for the Kellnersville Betterment Association or the VNA Hospice.
