Bluebirds fall to Madison West
JANESVILLE--Madison West’s boys hockey team continues to impress.
The Regents improved to 6-1 on the season Tuesday with a 4-1 win over Janesville in a Big Eight Conference game at the Janesville Ice Arena.
Janesville (4-3-1, 1-2-1) tied the game at 3:32 of the second period on Tyler Perkins’ goal, but West answered at 12:43 of the period on a goal by Max Lentz.
The Bluebirds were outshot 37-18 and got into trouble on two of West’s four goals by failing to clear the defensive end.
“We didn’t finish ours shifts a couple times and that hurt us,” Janesville coach John Mauermann said. “We talk about trying to stay mentally tough through the whole shift, but then we relax and bad things happen.
“When we were sharp, we were doing things well. We moved the puck and got up the ice. But you’ve got to finish, and that starts with getting the puck to the net.”
West (6-1-0, 4-1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first on Cole Paskus’ Big-Eight leading 11th goal of the season. Paskus added an assist on West’s second goal, while Lentz, Mick Messner and James Pretto had a goal and an assist each for the Regents.
Janesville’s Michael MacDougall played well in the net but was forced to wade through some defensive miscues by the Bluebirds. MacDougall finished with 33 saves, including 16 in the second period.
Leading 2-1 after two periods, West got an insurance goal on Messner’s power-play goal at 4:45, and Pretto added an empty-netter at 14:26.
“I thought the difference in the game was West’s third line,” Mauermann said. “It’s not that they scored, but the fact that our first line didn’t take advantage when their third line was on the ice.
“And like I said before, we did some good things but didn’t have anything to show for it.”
Janesville hosts Stoughton in a nonconference game Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
