John Edward Haakenson, 91, died on Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Janesville, WI. He was born June 15, 1922, in Porter Township, WI, the son of John and Karen (Hatlen) Haakenson. John graduated from Evansville High School in 1940. He married Barbara Reese on April 18, 1959, at the United Methodist Church in Evansville; Barbara preceded him in death on June 8, 2012. John served in aviation ordinance with the United States Navy during World War II, from October 1942 until January 1946. He was stationed in Norfolk, VA, Charleston, SC, Chincoteague, NY, as well as Panama and England. His return trip from England, took place on the famous ship, Queen Elizabeth II. He received service medals for the European Theatre, American Defense, Good Conduct and Victory. John was a member of V.F.W. Post 6905 Evansville, and participated in the firing squad for Military Services of fellow Veterans since 1946.

Upon completion of his military service, John worked at General Motors in Janesville for 31 years, retiring in 1980; after a one month retirement, he then worked as a groundskeeper at the Evansville Country Club for 19 years, permanently retiring in 1999. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, serving on the Church Council and various committees over the years. John enjoyed golfing and was a charter member of the Evansville Golf Association; one of his proudest accomplishments was a hole-in-one in 2000, that he achieved at the age of 78. He also enjoyed bowling in Evansville’s Thursday night men’s league for over 60 years, achieving a 700 series in 2002, at the age of 80.

John participated in a Badger Honor Flight to Washington DC in September 2012, a very special day enjoyed with other WWII veterans from Evansville, and his daughter, Ann. He also enjoyed attending the many sporting events of his grandchildren and visiting with his sister, Borg, on Wednesday afternoons.

John is survived by his daughters, Ann (Jake) Schoenenberger of Evansville, Julie (Terry) Nachtigal of Fort Atkinson; and his son, Mark, of Littleton, Colorado; six grandchildren: Kaia, Logan and Owen Schoenenberger and Taylor, James and Troy Nachtigal; one sister, Borghild Viney of Evansville; two sisters-in-law, Gladys Haakenson of Edgerton, and Diane Lappley of Evansville; one brother-in-law, Richard Reese of Brooklyn. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Olaf, Omar and Haakon; brother-in-law, Lyle Viney; and sister-in-law, Janet Wienke.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. at ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH in Evansville, with Reverend Matthew Poock officiating. Burial, with Military Rites by VFW Post 6905, will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the WARD-HURTLEY FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday, Dec. 18 from 5 until 8 p.m. and at the CHURCH on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
