During this time of year, when the ground is frosty and holiday cheer is in the air, there is one performance that should be on the must-see list. “The Nutcracker” performed by The Dance Factory will be presented Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Young Auditorium on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus.

Watch this classic ballet brought to life by a cast of talented local dancers in a dazzling production enhanced by radiant costumes and the thrilling music of Tchaikovsky.

This holiday-themed ballet focuses on a young girl named Clara, who is given an extraordinary nutcracker as a Christmas gift from the mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer. After seeing the nutcracker her brother is stricken with jealously and wants to play with it immediately. In a tug of war between the two, the doll breaks and Clara is left devastated.

When all seems lost, the nutcracker emerges as a life-size warrior who defeats the Rat Queen's troops and reveals himself as a handsome prince. He escorts Clara to the Kingdom of Sweets for an enchanting show, featuring an astonishing number of dancing displays, before she awakens back in her own room.

Each year something new is added to the performance to keep it fresh; this year Clara has a “magic bed” that glides across the floor. Keep your eyes peeled for a little friend scurrying across the floor during one of the early scenes.

The Dance Factory is proud to present the production of “The Nutcracker” featuring local dancers.
