The holidays are hectic, what with shopping, parties and family plans. This weekend, the Janesville Jets are giving area residents a good chance to take a break and catch the action at the Janesville Ice Arena.

Maybe you're a hockey fan but have only occasionally gotten to Jets games. Or maybe you've never been inside the ice arena. Whatever the case, the Jets are selling all tickets for just $6 for games at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday against the Springfield Jr. Blues.

Regular prices are $8 for adults and $6.50 for kids and senior citizens. Call this discount an early Christmas gift. It helps make a game affordable for families.

“Our ownership felt that this was a great way for the organization to show its appreciation for the past five years of support,” Jets Operations Manager Greg Hanthorn said in a news release. “With all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, a night out at the Jets game will be a welcome break.”

The team plans special giveaways, the annual Ugly Sweater Contest and presentations including a mites hockey scrimmage.

Attendance at Jets games is lagging. Residents should not take the team for granted. The city upgraded the ice arena in part to accommodate this North American Hockey League franchise. The Jets have become an important part of Janesville and have given back much to the community. Last year, players provided more than 2,000 hours of service, earning the Forward Janesville Community Improvement Award. They continue to serve this season.

The Jets, ages 16-20, are among the most talented young hockey players in the country. They hope to earn college scholarships. Six on the current roster have secured Division 1 commitments.

Jets games provide quality, affordable family entertainment. Visiting teams, families and supporters spend money here.

The Jets make Janesville a more attractive place to live and do business. The team deserves our continued support, and this weekend offers a perfect chance to show it.
