Edgerton's Ricky Williams, Walworth Big Foot's Gus Wedig named to AP all-state team
It never was a question if Ricky Williams was all-state worthy.
The Edgerton High junior led the state in rushing en route to a record-breaking season.
The only question now: How was he not a unanimous first-team selection?
Williams was named Monday to the Associated Press' first team, but not all nine writers who voted had Williams on the first team.
That's hard to comprehend.
The 5-foot-6, 140-pound Williams finished with 2,349 yards rushing on 246 carries. Fond du Lac St. Mary's Springs senior Ike Floyd, who was a unanimous selection, finished second in the state in rushing with 2,239 yards and played one more game than Williams. Williams averaged 213 yards a game and 9.5 yards per carry despite opposing teams' best efforts to shut down the run. He broke the Edgerton single-season rushing record of 1,802 set in 1998 by Jesse Appel and the single-game record with 343 yards in a win over Brodhead/Juda.
Despite the record-setting season, Williams' most impressive stat may be the 168 yards he gained in a Division 3 playoff loss to Monona Grove. Williams was the only player in 14 games to rush for 100 yards against the D3 champion Silver Eagles.
Williams is the second Edgerton player to earn AP first-team honors. Dick Pope, a 1967 Edgerton graduate, made the first team as a defensive back in 1966.
The AP selections announced Monday also include Walworth Big Foot's Gus Wedig on the first team at inside linebacker. The 6-3, 200-pound senior had 84 solo tackles, including 15 for losses, and intercepted two passes to lead the Chiefs to a seventh straight Rock Valley South title.
Edgerton senior offensive lineman James McGuire was honorable mention.
Appleton Xavier quarterback Matt Ferris was the AP's Player of the Year. The senior passed for 3,949 yards and 50 touchdowns, both state records. He averaged nearly 304 yards passing per game and had a season-high 420 yards and eight touchdown passes, another state record, against Ripon in a 64-14 victory.
Clint Peters, who guided Winneconne to the Division 4 title, was named Coach of the Year. Winneconne started 2-5, losing to Appleton Xavier, 42-0, but won its last seven games.
