Mary Joan O'Leary, Janesville, WI (1926-2013)

Mary Joan O’Leary, age 87, of Janesville, died on Sunday morning, Dec. 8, 2013, at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center. She was born in Rockford, on June 22, 1926, the daughter of John Francis Kinna and Mildred Ann (LaPointe) Kinna. At an early age, she moved with her parents to a small farm at RR 5 east of Footville. It was there that she grew up within an extended family that spanned several generations. Mary Joan married Francis Joseph O’Leary in Footville, on Oct. 18, 1947, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 1976. During her senior year in high school, Mary Joan began working at the Parker Pen Company. After graduating from Orfordville High School as class salutatorian in 1944, she became a full-time employee at Parker Pen until the birth of her children. She returned to the workplace in 1974, as an instructional aide at Footville Elementary School, retiring in 1994. For many years after her retirement, she worked as a volunteer at the Castaways resale store. Mary Joan was an avid reader throughout her life with a special fondness for mystery and detective novels. She enjoyed classical music, jigsaw and word search puzzles, bargain hunting and following Wisconsin’s professional and university sports teams. She was a member of St. William Catholic Church, the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, AFSCME, and AARP.
Mary Joan is survived by her three children: Mary Ellen O’Leary of Janesville, David Francis (Debbie) O’Leary of Crystal Lake, IL, and Paul William O’Leary of Janesville; two grandchildren, Bradley Francis of Arcata, CA, and Katherine Ann (Jonathan) France of Waukesha; one sister, Jane (Elmer) Guse of Crystal Lake, IL; one brother, John (Irene) Kinna of Footville; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sister, Katherine (Rodney) Selck.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at ST. WILLIAM CATHOLIC CHURCH with Rev. John Auby officiating. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9:30 until 11 a.m. at the CHURCH. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
