Marley Campbell spoiled a gritty road performance by Janesville Craig’s girls basketball team Saturday night.

Campbell’s basket with two seconds left lifted Verona to a 54-52 Big Eight Conference win over the Cougars.

Craig (2-1, 1-1) tied the game at 52-52 and had a chance to play for the last shot, but a turnover with 37 seconds left set up Campbell’s heroics.

“This one hurts a little bit,” Craig coach Kerry Storbakken said. “Verona’s probably the best team in the conference, and we had them on the ropes.

“But we’ll grow from this. We’re still pretty young, and I really liked our effort tonight.”

Verona took the clock down to the final seconds before Ebony Nettles-Bay split two Craig defenders down the lane and found Campbell wide open for the game-winner.

Ali Calkins had 14 points to lead the Cougars, while Al Hughes added 13 and Aleya Slatter 11.

Verona freshman Alex Luehring led all scorers with 16, including two pivotal three-point baskets in the fourth.

Craig hosts Sun Prairie in a Big Eight game Tuesday night.
