Burlington's Echo Lake Foods purchases Ind. site

BURLINGTON—Almost a year after a fire devastated its egg processing plant and office space, Echo Lake Foods purchased a 95,000 square-foot facility in Indiana, according to a story in the Business Journal.

The Burlington-based company paid $300,000 to Unilever for a former ice cream plant in Huntington, Ind., last month, but has not officially said what it plans to do with the building.

An eight-alarm fire in late January virtually destroyed the plant and put 300 employees out of work.

While company officials have worked with staff in the city of Burlington on plans to rebuild, the company's general manager has brought up the idea of moving the egg processing plant elsewhere and shipping the product back to Wisconsin.

Echo Lake Foods, the community's largest employer, got its start in 1941 as an egg delivery service, and has grown to provide eggs for frozen omelets and other breakfast food products.
