Fury goes 2-1 at Black River Falls
The Rock County Fury girls hockey team earned a spot in the championship game at the Black River Falls tournament on Saturday.
The Fury topped Rhineland 4-0 early in the day, but lost in the title game, 5-2, to Middleton.
In the first game, Chelsea Gusk scored twice in the third period to put the game away, and Madison Lewis made 26 saves to earn the shutout.
“We put together three great periods of hockey,” Fury coach Darrel Moore said. “Shutting out Rhinelander is a great accomplishment. They have two great scorers. Our team defense kept them from getting high-percentage shots, and Madison Lewis was awesome in net.”
The Fury grabbed the lead midway through the second period of the championship game, but three second-period power-play goals put their title hopes on ice.
Marci Mitchell-Hallett scored the first goal and Ellie Woodman netted her second score of the day in the championship game.
The Fury host Viroqua in Monroe at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
