Walworth County gets Clean Sweep grant
MADISON –- Walworth County will receive $11,300 in grant money for its 2014 Clean Sweep programs that collect and safely dispose of hazardous household wastes, unused prescription drugs and leftover agricultural chemicals.
The county will receive $8, 500 for household hazardous waste collection and $2,800 for prescription drug collection from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, as part of its annual Clean Sweep grants given to villages, cities, counties, tribe and regional consortiums.
The Rock County Health Department will receive $5,000 for prescription drug collection. The Rock County Land Conservation Department will get $8.750 for household hazardous waste collection, and $3,600 for agrichemical collection.
Wisconsin communities will receive a total of more than $750,000 next year.
Some will hold one- to three-day collections and others will use the funding toward more long-term collections. More than half the funding -- $413,200 – is going to collect household hazardous wastes. Agricultural waste collections will receive $250,000 and prescription drug collections, $100,000.
"Wisconsin Clean Sweep helps communities with funding to guard against risks to public health, animals and the environment," says Clean Sweep manager Jane Larson. "Hazardous wastes that people find in their basements and garages, and unneeded or outdated agrichemicals, can get into landfills or even be dumped in ditches, and eventually find their way into surface or groundwater. Unused prescription drugs left in medicine cabinets are a threat to children and a temptation to teens."
Since its inception, the program has collected more than 3 million pounds of agrichemical waste, nearly 17 million pounds of household hazardous wastes, and nearly 140,000 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs. Clean Sweep began collecting agricultural chemicals in 1990. Household hazardous wastes were added in 2004, and pharmaceuticals in 2008.
