April 16, 1943 - November 23, 2013

Richard A. Johnson, 70, of Janesville, succumbed peacefully to ALS on Nov. 23, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family. Dick was born in Janesville, to Patricia Gandy on April 16, 1943. He spent much of his childhood in California, before returning to Milton, to finish high school. Richard married Martha Hillestad on Dec. 9, 1961. He served in the Marines and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He and Martha owned and operated Milton Ace Hardware for 35 years, carrying on the family business that his father-in-law, Don Hillestad, began in the 1930s. In 1995, Dick began his second career as a successful Realtor in Rock County. He was active in the Milton community throughout his life, including serving as a Milton Junction volunteer firefighter, on the first Board of Directors of the Gathering Place, and on the Board of Directors of First Community Bank. Dick was a kind, loving, and generous man who treasured, above all else, spending time with his family. He was a slightly better-than-average golfer, a great poker player, and a lover of good Scotch. He loved spending time outdoors, whether it was hunting with his sons and grandsons in the Wisconsin Northwoods, feeding and watching the birds in his backyard, or hiking in the Grand Canyon. To the very end, he never lost his sense of humor.

Richard is survived by his wife, Martha; three children: David (Michelle) Johnson, Sarah (Brian) Swingle and Brian (Peter Petralia) Johnson; daughter-in-law, Sherie Johnson; six grandchildren: Joshua (Lisa) Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Grant Johnson, Drew Johnson, Jane Swingle, and Jack Swingle; two great-grandchildren, Graham Johnson and Isla Johnson; two brothers, Robert Heine and David Heine; and two sisters, Cathie (Keith) Ness and Cindy (Artie) Bojorquez. Richard was preceded in death by his son, Michael Johnson; his parents, Patricia and William Heine; and two sisters, Billie Gomez and Betty Jo Wissman.

Richard's family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the dedicated staff at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, and Agrace HospiceCare. In honor of the exceptional care he received, memorials may be given in Richard's name to either the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital or Agrace HospiceCare.

Visitation will be from 10am until 12 Noon and funeral services will begin at 12 Noon on Saturday, Nov. 30, at ROCK PRAIRIE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 8605 E. County Road A, Janesville. Arrangements are by ALBRECHT FUNERAL HOMES.
