JANESVILLE--A Janesville City Council incumbent and a newcomer are the fist to take out papers to run for city council in spring.

Mark Bobzien, 55, of 1139 Columbus Circle, is retired. He has never run for public office before.

Incumbent Jim Farrell, 67, of 1427 N. Harmony Drive, is a retired certified public accountant. He is seeking his second term.

Residents can pick up papers in the city clerk's office at 18 N. Jackson St. at any time. They can start collecting signatures Sunday, Dec. 1.

Candidates need more than 200 signatures but not more than 400. They must turn in their papers by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Three council seats are open in the April 1 election.

Council members whose two-year terms expire are Farrell, Kathy Voskuil and Matt Kealy.
