The Gazette's Vision 2020 special section earned first place in the Explanatory Reporting category of the Inland Press Association's 2013 Local News Writing Contest.

The Gazette's win in the national competition came in a category for newspapers of circulations between 10,000 and 49,000.

Vision 2020 was published in April and took a detailed look at Janesville and Rock County's future in 10 key categories, including the economy, education, health care, the environment and agriculture.

Second place went to the Reading Eagle of Pennsylvania for a series on guns and mental health, and third was awarded to the Wyoming Tribune Eagle of Cheyenne for a package titled “Secret Agenda at City Hall.”

The award was presented Oct. 29 during a ceremony as part of Inland's 128th Annual Meeting in Chicago.

The Inland Press Association, founded in 1885, is a 125-year-old United States-based not-for-profit organization owned by its member newspapers. Inland has more than 1,200 daily and weekly newspaper members in all 50 states, Canada and Bermuda.
