Louis Joseph Berner, age 90, of Janesville, died on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at Rock Haven Nursing Home. He was born in Milton on May 21, 1923, the son of Louis M. and Mary (Felix) Berner. He graduated from the UW-Madison certified in Public Health. He married Josephine Honisch on April 27, 1946, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, and she preceded him death on July 14, 2012. Louis had been employed by the City of Janesville, as Director of Environmental Health, retiring on Jan. 15, 1982. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Janesville, the 50 Plus Club and served as an usher. He was a member of the Wisconsin Environmental Health Assoc., Wisconsin Milk and Food Officials, National Association of Sanitarians, was a professional licensed Sanitarian with the States of Wisconsin and Illinois, Knights of Columbus Council 10363, Msgr. Hanz 4th Degree Assembly Knights of Columbus, Knights of Columbus Honor Guard, and the Moose Lodge #197. Louis enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by his 2 children, Thomas J. (Carol) Berner of Janesville and Patricia (Charles) Grimm of Lancaster, NY; 2 grandchildren, Eric (Emily) Grimm of Menominee Falls and Erin Grimm of Lancaster, NY; step granddaughter, Jennifer Kautz; 2 great grandchildren, Emma Geisendorfer and Olivia Grimm; and 3 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; 4 sisters: Loretta Stillmank, Mary Henry, Helen Miller and Elizabeth Fuller; and 1 brother, Aloysius Berner.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, Janesville with Rev. John Auby officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Lasting Memorials may be made to St. Mary's School Endowment Fund.
