JANESVILLE—A set of Madison triplets will pass through Janesville this weekend on a walk to raise awareness for rebuilding efforts in earthquake-shattered Haiti.

Megan, Abby and Melanie Walker will leave Madison on Friday and begin their 150-mile walk to Chicago, which they plan to reach Saturday, Nov. 2.

They plan to walk 15 to 20 miles each day and will spend Sunday night at the Janesville home of Mick and Susan Pike.

The Walkers will document their journey with videos and posts on Twitter, Facebook and email.

The 24-year-olds have traveled to Haiti several times with the Madison-based nonprofit Haiti Allies and have dedicated themselves to various fundraisers to support the organization's partnerships in Haiti.

Abby Walker said the women want to raise awareness about post-earthquake Haiti and help raise the roof for a new elementary school building for more than 200 students in Port-au-Prince.

Haiti Allies' work with Citè Soleil Community School became especially near and dear to the young women's hearts. The school was destroyed in the 2010 earthquake and has been operating in a tarp-and-plywood structure ever since, providing free educations to children in one of the poorest places in the western hemisphere.

The Walkers' goal is to raise half of the $250,000 needed to rebuild the school through per mile sponsorships from both corporations and private donors.

“There is a certain magic and love at CSCS. It's contagious really,” Megan Walker said in a news release. “The energy, drive and hope within the plywood walls and flyaway tarps is unexplainable and amazing.

“CSCS is filled to the brim everyday with beautiful children who are so eager and ready to learn. We are determined to walk the miles and make the dollars for a new Citè Soleil Community School structure.”

Abby Walker is a recent graduate of UW-Milwaukee with a media studies major. She hopes to join the Peace Corps.

Megan Walker is completing her creative writing degree this fall at UW-Milwaukee, and Melanie Walker is a recent Edgewood College graduate with an elementary education degree.
