MADISON--A group of nine girls huddled outside the scorers tent, waiting for Janesville Parker senior Taylor Wyss.

Wyss' signed scorecard signified the end of a storied run for the girls golf team, but the Vikings—varsity and junior varsity players alike—were going to enjoy the experience right through to its final moment.

When Wyss emerged, the massive group hug began.

The Vikings took 13 strokes off of their first-day score, shooting 346 on a rainy second day of play at the WIAA State Girls Golf Championship at University Ridge on Tuesday. They finished in sixth place.

“Our dreams came true,” said senior Micayla Richards, whose 10-over 82 was the team's best second-round score. “All of us wanted to be here, and we got here. It was a great experience.

“We grew together with all the time we spent together—memories, laughing, bus rides, everything.”

Arrowhead captured the Division 1 championship with a team score of 638, topping Verona by 10 strokes. Verona's Jessica Reinicke won the individual title, shooting 1-under for the tournament to win by four strokes. Milton's Maddie McCue used a final-round 74 to finish 11th.

Parker's goal was to improve on day one, where nerves took their toll. Three of the five players improved on their first-round scores, including junior Kailey McDade, who fired an 84, and freshman Keara Richards, who shot a career-best 94.

“We've been riding this emotional high,” Parker coach Mary Ross said. “Today we settled down more and played more of our usual game, which was awesome to see.

“All I can say is that I'm just full of pride.”

Micayla Richards' 82 gave her a two-day score of 167, which tied for 20th individually. Senior Taylor Wyss was three shots back.

“I played really good, actually,” Richards said. “I started off a little rough, but I came in and parred a lot and caught up.”

It was a solid finish to Parker's second trip to the state tournament and first since 2009.

“We knew we were seeded seventh (coming into today) and we've been ranked about sixth all year, so we wanted to improve on that,” Ross said. “Either way, it was icing on the cake to play here.”
