JANESVILLE—Janesville police have arrested two suspects in a purse snatching at a downtown tavern, less than a week after authorities said bar patrons tried to chase down one of the men.

Cory C. Scheidegger, 31, of 508 W. Holmes St., Janesville, was arrested on a felony charge of theft from an elderly person Friday, police said.

Scheidegger and another man, Craig W. Champion, 25, of 666 S. Bluff St., South Beloit, Ill., entered Riley's Sports Bar & Grill, 209 W. Milwaukee St., on the night of Oct. 8 and stole a purse off of a bar table.

A group of patrons tried to chase Scheidegger as he ran from the bar but couldn't catch him, authorities said.

Police arrested Scheidegger and Champion on Friday after seeing video footage and talking with witnesses, according to a news release.

Champion was arrested on a charge of being a party theft from an elderly person. The release did not indicate what role authorities believe Champion played in the theft.
