Milton's upset bid comes up just short
MONONA GROVE—For three quarters, it looked like the Milton Red Hawks might pull off the Badger South Conference shocker of the year.
Heck, make that several years.
Milton took a one-touchdown lead deep into the third quarter at Monona Grove on Friday night, but the Silver Eagles scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the final 17 minutes to escape with a 14-7 victory.
It was Monona Grove’s 33rd straight victory in the Badger South and the win clinched its fifth-straight league title.
Milton got on the board in the second quarter when Tyler Westrick hit Taylor Snell for a 27-yard touchdown.
The Red Hawks’ defense made that lead hold up until there were less than five minutes left in the third quarter. Tyler Blang blasted 26 yards for the touchdown, and the extra point tied the game.
It remained that way until Brock Offerdahl gave the Silver Eagles their first lead with a 2-yard plunge with 4:16 left.
Milton fell to 2-5 overall, but just 2-3 in the Badger South. It will become playoff-eligible if it can beat Stoughton at home on Friday.
