Kaylee Rossing delivered her own birthday present Wednesday.

The Janesville Craig High senior won two matches at No. 1 singles at the Division 1 Badger Sectional to earn a spot in the WIAA State Tennis Tournament that begins next Thursday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

Rossing, whose birthday was Wednesday, defeated Taylor Nelson of Monona Grove, 7-5, 2-6, 12-10, to earn her first trip to state.

“She was down 2-7 in the tiebreaker and came back,” Craig coach Bill Peyer said. “And she had an interesting first set. (Nelson) did not have the power Kaylee is used to playing with, and that gave Kaylee some trouble.”

Rossing then defeated Peyton Scherff of Mukwonago, 6-2, 6-4.

In the championship match, Dao Sysouvanh of Sun Prairie defeated Rossing, 6-1, 6-1.

Rossing takes a 10-12 record into the state tournament.

“It was a big day for her,” Peyer said. “Plus it’s her birthday, so we were hoping it would go well.”

Two Janesville Parker High players lost in the first round to fall just short of state.

Becky Harmata lost to Sysouvanh, while Meghann Hoag lost in the No. 2 singles title match to Jessica Inman of Sun Prairie.

Milton’s No. 1 doubles team of Zyann Furseth and Maddie Erdman advanced to state thanks to a fourth-place finish at the Badger Sectional.

Lake Geneva Badger’s doubles team of Joanie Williams and Andrea Chironis won the title at No. 1.
