JANESVILLE—The 69-year-old woman whose purse he tried to steal didn't stop a Milton man Saturday afternoon, police said, but a group of bystanders who chased him down and restrained him until the cops showed up certainly did.

Curtis E. McGill, 28, 5340 N. Sweet Briar Drive, Milton, grabbed the woman's purse from her shopping cart as she loaded items into her car outside the Janesville mall around 4:45 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release.

The woman fell and suffered minor injuries as she tried to get her purse back, police said.

A handful of people who heard the commotion saw McGill running away with the woman's purse and ran after him, eventually catching McGill at the intersection of Refset Drive and Hancock Lane, police said.

The bystanders detained McGill until police arrived and arrested him on a felony charge of theft of moveable property from the elderly, according to the release.
