The lead story in today's Gazette reports that Janesville Public Works Director Carl Weber wants the city council to double the annual investment in street repairs and more than double the miles.

“We're not keeping up,” Weber says. Many drivers likely would agree, and many taxpayers likely would support this plan despite the fact The Gazette's lead story Wednesday detailed a city budget proposal that includes a 2.6 percent increase in property taxes.

Resurfacing streets when they're in fair condition saves more costly full reconstruction when they're in deplorable shape later on, Weber reasons. The costs of materials keep rising as state aid that could help fund street repairs falls.

The city just reopened the reconstructed River Street west of the Rock River. I'm still waiting to see when that rough patch of northbound Randall Street, just south of Mt. Zion Avenue, gets resurfaced.

Which Janesville street do you think most needs resurfacing or reconstruction? Which road in Rock County or in some outlying community?
