Even in defeat, Janesville Craig had one of its most memorable girls swimming meets in school history Friday night.

The Cougars lost to perennial power Madison Memorial, 88-82, in a meet that went down to the final event.

Craig coach Brian Kitzman said he didn't think Craig had ever given a Memorial squad a better meet.

“This is by far the closest we've been in the last 15 years been to one of the top teams,” Kitzman said. “To say it was exciting is an understatement. It was exhilarating.

“The team seemed to gain confidence the longer we hung with them,” Kitzman said. “We were tied after the breaststroke and it came down to who won the 400 freestyle relay.”

Craig, which won the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay, could not come up with the win in the 400 freestyle relay, finishing six seconds behind the Spartans' first-place finish.

Besides the two relay event victories, Alexis Roach (200 freestyle), Kendall Cawkins (500 freestyle), Emma Schmaling (100 butterfly) and Sierra Rhodes (100 freestyle) each recorded an individual victory.

“It wasn't just the first-place finishes,” Kitzman said. “We had a lot of second- and third-place finishes.”

And that gave the Cougars a meet to remember despite the loss.

“It was surreal,” Kitzman said. “We've had so many lopsided losses against Memorial, so it's a good accomplishment for our girls. Our team gained a lot by having a meet like this.”

The Cougars next meet is Friday at Middleton.
