Sun Prairie sweeps Parker in volleyball
Sun Prairie High’s girls volleyball team is one win away from a Big Eight Conference dual meet title.
The Cardinals came into Thursday night’s match against Janesville Parker with a perfect 7-0 conference record.
The Vikings were victim No. 8.
Sun Prairie raced to an early lead in all three games en route to a 3-0 win. The Cardinals won all three games by scores of 25-13.
Parker (2-6), which led only once the entire match, played well in spurts but could not sustain any momentum against the taller and more experienced Cardinals.
“Even though we lost, I thought we took a big step up from Tuesday,” Parker coach Kathy Bullis said of her team’s poor showing in losing at Verona. “We played with better speed tonight and kept the ball in play much better than we did Tuesday.
“It’s still a learning process for us. But I definitely think we showed improvement tonight.”
The ninth-ranked Cardinals jumped out to an 8-2 lead in game one and did not allow the Vikings to get any closer than five after that. Anna Brereton, who finished with a game-high 14 digs, put the first game away with an ace.
Sun Prairie kept up the attack in game two. After Parker tied the second game at 8-8, Sun Prairie went on a 6-0 run behind the serving of Emily Chaussee. The Vikings cut the lead to five at 15-10 but got no closer.
Game three was all Cardinals as they opened up an early 9-3 lead.
Sun Prairie coach T.J. Rantala said her team did not have a letdown after Tuesday’s win over previously unbeaten Middleton.
“We talked about coming out tonight and setting the tone, and that’s what we did,” Rantala said. “Tuesday was a huge win for us, but these girls are hungry for a lot more.
“Their attitude and desire makes my job very easy. They’re a great group to work with and they want to be successful.”
Kyslee Greve had eight digs and an ace to lead Parker, which plays at the Janesville Craig Invitational on Saturday.
