FORT ATKINSON--The Craig Cougars got the start and the effort they were hoping for on Monday night.

It wasn’t quite enough, however, as the boys soccer team fell 3-2 in a nonconference road game at Fort Atkinson.

Ian O’Donnell gave the Cougars the lead right away, scoring off a pass from Ian Reinicke in just the second minute of action.

But the Blackhawks answered with a pair of goals before halftime.

“For the most part, the boys did everything right tonight,” Craig coach Mike Hook said. “Unfortunately we gifted them two very soft goals in the first half. One just rolled through the keeper’s hands and the second was a miscommunication. We’re not too happy losing a game we thought we should have won.”

Fort Atkinson added what turned out to be a necessary insurance goal seven minutes into the second half.

Fernando Reyes drew Craig back within a goal on a penalty kick, but the Cougars couldn’t complete the comeback.

“It’s a learning experience,” Hook said.

The Cougars hope to bounce back today in Madison. They’ll pick up a match against Madison La Follette that was suspended due to weather on Thursday. The match resumes at 5 p.m. with La Follette leading 2-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
