JANESVILLE--The Janesville Craig boys soccer team hoped Tuesday night might have been its time for a Big Eight breakthrough.

But Beloit Memorial traveled here thinking the same thing.

Aaron Weber scored on a free kick a little more than two minutes into the game, Jose Barron added back-to-back goals early in the second half, and the Purple Knights took down the Cougars, 3-0.

“We talked about trying to jump on these guys early and trying to keep the pressure up,” Beloit coach Brian Denu said. “They’re much-improved from last year. Being able to get that first goal was huge.”

Craig was called for a foul just outside the 18-yard scoring box just minutes into the match, setting up Weber for his free kick.

Still getting settled in, the Cougars seemed caught off guard by Weber’s blast.

“I think it was a silly goal to concede,” Craig coach Mike Hook said. “But they’re young and they make mistakes.

“Beloit’s a strong team, and they took all their chances and played us well. They exploited a little bit of our slow start.”

The Knights nearly added to their lead multiple times in the first half. A potential goal about 11 minutes into the match was wiped away by an offsides call, and Beloit players blasted the ball off the crossbar two separate times.

Barron had no such tough luck when he scored two goals in as many minutes early in the second half.

“It felt like we controlled and dominated for a lot of that game,” Denu said. “That last goal kind of put us over the top and we could relax a little bit.”

Beloit improved to 1-3 in the Big Eight and has its sights set on getting back to .500.

The Cougars fell to 0-5.

“I think they do have the confidence,” Hook said. “I think today they really wanted to prove something. And I thought that we finally had an opponent that we could prove something against that was closer to our level. But nothing was going right.”

Craig travels to Madison La Follette on Thursday.
