DELAVAN--Think of it as a beauty pageant of sorts—for scarecrows.

And with a lot of audience participation.

Delavan will hold the 13th annual Scarecrow Fest Saturday, September 14. The dressed and decorated scarecrows that have been popping up on light poles in downtown Delavan will be tagged and ballots printed for visitors to the festival. The public gets to pick their favorite scarecrows and a winner is crowned. Then, throughout the month of September, and into early October, downtown Delavan will have its scarecrows on parade.

Scarecrow artists embrace both the traditional and the unusual in their designs. Among the winning entries last year were an alien, a “bridezilla” and a steam punk scarecrow.

Visitors can even build their own scarecrow to take home. But beyond the creative scarecrows, this year's festival's scheduled activities include pumpkin painting, free children's face painting, live music, a craft fair and flea market, sidewalk sales, food, the third annual pie and cake auction, and a concert at the Phoenix Park Bandshell.

Also featured is The Great Delavan Duck Raffle, with winners announced at 2:30 p.m. during the festival. Cash prizes range from $50 to $200, in addition to items donated by local businesses.

Raffle tickets are $2, or 3 for $5; they can be purchased at many downtown businesses, including Bradley's Department Store, Lauren's Antique & Art Centre, Lubick Gallery, Gill Family Chiropractic, Brick Street Market, Scene II, Del-Mart, or Remember When. Proceeds go to beautifying downtown Delavan and community projects, including the 2015 Walldog event and the Fresh Market weekly farmers market.

Delavan's Downtown Business Association has again worked with local artists to present this year's summer public art show, “Plant Yourself in Delavan”.  Flower Planters have been decorated by artists and are for sale throughout downtown Delavan, including at Bradley's of Delavan, Lauren's Antique & Art Centre, and Remember When. You can view the planters on the Delavan Downtown Business Association's Facebook page.  Proceeds from planter sales will go to sponsoring a mural at 2015 Walldog event.
