HCE classes cover bison, microwaving, insect invaders

ELKHORN--Learn more about the benefits of bison meat, how to keep insects from coming indoors, and the underused microwave.

Walworth County Association of Home and Community Education (HCE) will host an Evening of Learning on Thursday, September 26 from 6 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. at the Walworth County Government Center, 100 W. Walworth St., in Elkhorn.
    
Topics will include: Bison: The Perfect Red Meat, Managing Indoor Insects, and Microwave Magic.
    
Bison at one time were near extinction. Because of state and national herds and bison ranchers, the American bison is more than 450,000 animals strong. People have discovered that bison meat is not only delicious, it is healthy, environmentally friendly, and can usually be purchased locally.  Presenter is Phyllis Olson of Elkhorn.

Fall is a great time to learn how to identify the most common invading indoor insects, discuss management options to control them, and share a few easy steps to keep them outside, where they belong. Bed bugs, box elder bugs, spiders, and other insects will be discussed. Presenter Chrissy Wen, Walworth County UW-Extension Horticulture Educator, will also welcome bug-related gardening questions.

Too often microwave oven owners only defrost, reheat, or cooking microwave meals, but the microwave is a  convenient and cost-effective way to prepare delicious meals. Jenny Wehmeier, Walworth County UW-Extension Family Living Educator, will demonstrate ideas for main dishes, breakfast, and snacks. Participants will leave with new ideas to add variety to quick meals.

The workshops are open to everyone. Cost is $2 for HCE Members and $5 for non-members. Pre-registration is required, money is due with registration. Participants will have the choice of taking two classes out of the three being offered.
