Parker golfers set scoring record
Finally back playing competitive golf on its home course, the Janesville Parker girls golf team broke its program scoring record.
The Vikings teamed up to shoot 334, breaking their mark of 337 set in their first stroke-play competition of this season, to top Janesville Craig and Beloit Memorial in a Big Eight Conference triangular Wednesday at Riverside Golf Course.
“We haven't been on our home course all season. We were excited to play there, and they were gearing up to do well,” Parker coach Mary Ross said. “My three and four players have been on the cusp of shooting in the low 80s and breaking that record. I'm so thrilled they did it at home.”
The Cougars moved closer to their goal of breaking 400, shooting 407. Beloit's score was incomplete as it did not field a complete team.
The Vikings, who set their previous mark at Yahara Hills, put together a complete team effort.
Micayla Richards and Kailey McDade each fired rounds of 11-over 83 for Parker, while Taylor Wyss and Lindsey Ahrens each shot 84.
“They needed to feel what that's like to take us into the tournament phase,” Ross said. “Lindsey's shot in the lower 80s before, but we've been fighting the heat, and I think coming home helped. They're putting the small things together.”
The Cougars were led by Hayley Arneson's round of 93. She shot a blistering 39 over her final nine holes—the front nine as the players teed off of No. 10—after putting her driver away for the day.
“(Shooting 400) was kind of our goal at the beginning of the season, and we're getting close,” Craig coach Dominic Weigel said. “Kelsey Hackett's 104 was her personal best. Hayley had never broke 40 on nine holes, so she had a good comeback.
“It's just getting more experience. I'm confident we'll get to that 400 mark by the end of the year.”
Both teams will compete in the Janesville Parker Invite back at Riverside on Saturday. The shotgun-start tournament will feature more than 20 teams in action.
