VERONA--The Janesville Craig boys soccer team was shut out for the first time this season on Tuesday night in a 4-0 loss at Verona.

The Cougars gave up two first-half goals over a matter of five minutes midway through the half, then Santiago Azcarate found the back of the net twice in the second half.

“Skill-wise, we were able to play with them; they play a very similar game to the way we do,” Craig coach Mike Hook said. “There was some very nice passing on display. I don’t know if they ever made a mistake in passing or marking, which makes it difficult to get chances.

“We’re just not quite at that level yet.”

David Diaz made 10 saves for the Cougars, who fell to 4-3 overall and 0-3 in the Big Eight. They host Sun Prairie at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

“We had a handful of kids out with injuries, but the team kept working hard,” Vikings coach Jason Bier said. “I was actually pleased to see them string some passes together. It’s just getting to the right spot, communicating and talking on the field. Nobody quit.”
