JANESVILLE—Queso addicts, your wait will soon be over.

It doesn't look like much now, but come the start of next year the intersection of Humes Road and Milton Avenue will be home to a dental clinic and, yes, a local franchise of the Mexican restaurant chain Qdoba, developers say.

Crews are working to build a 7,500 square-foot strip center in what is now the parking lot of a Kmart store, said Mandy Witt, sales associate for commercial real estate at Coldwell Banker Commercial, McGuire Mears and Associates.

The project is on track to meet its planned opening date of Jan. 1, 2014, Witt said.

There's a third, 2,700 square-foot unit in the center as well, she said, but no tenant has signed for it yet. Developers also are considering splitting that space into two units.

Work on the project has so far taken place below ground, said Tom Gilbank, whose company Gilbank Construction is building the strip center.

Crews are doing site preparation right now, Gilbank said, moving sanitary sewer and utility lines.

“You don't notice this when you look, it doesn't look like a lot of activity, but things are happening,” he said.

They hope to have the footings and foundation done by the end of September, and passersby should start to see the new building taking shape by mid-October, Gilbank said.

Exterior work should be done in early December, he said.

After that, it won't be long before burrito lovers have another way to get their fix.
