ELKHORN—Janesville Craig High’s volleyball team capped off an impressive Saturday with a gritty championship victory over Elkhorn at the Elks’ invite.

Craig didn’t lose a game in four matches to get to the championship, but needed to rally against the Elks. The Cougars won the third game, 16-14.

“It was exciting. All three of those games against Elkhorn were intense,” Craig coach Blake Budrow said. “The players played with a lot of emotion.”

“The second game was tied 14-14 and they went on a big run. I think catching up a little gave us confidence going into Game 3.”

Beloit Memorial took third place, while Palmyra-Eagle was fourth in the eight-team invite.

The key to Craig’s success was a balanced attack up front. Ali Calkins led the Cougars with 28 kills, while Ally Raymond had 27 and McKenzie Bertagnoli 25.

“Bertagnoli, in the first couple games, was doing a great job on the right side,” Budrow said. “Calkins and Raymond started hitting better out of the middle when teams started to shade, so we spread it around.”

Gabby Loveland had 12 aces for the Cougars, while Kayley Hackett piled up 86 assists.

Ali Flasch led the Elks with 90 assists, 30 digs and eight aces. Erin Schahczinski had 33 kills, six aces and three blocks.

Craig is now 13-4 and returns to Big Eight Conference play, hosting Madison West at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
