County Highway NN reconstruction meeting set
ELKHORN--The reconstruction of a little over two miles of County Highway NN from the I-43 bridge east through the Walworth County Government Complex, ending approximately 650 feet east of Lakeland School is scheduled for 2015.
A public information meeting regarding the bridge replacement and interchange reconstruction portion of this project is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 4 to 6 p.m.at the Walworth County Public Works Department, W4097 County Road NN, Elkhorn.
According to information from the public works department, the project will replace existing pavement, which is cracked, contains failing patches from wear by water after heavy storms.
The department also noted the stretch of existing road—with posted speed limits ranging from 35 to 55 mph--lacks a sidewalk or trail, forcing pedestrians and bicyclists onto the shoulder of the road. According to department information, 11 personal injury and 43 property damage accidents have occurred along that stretch over the last 10 years.
As part of the project, a new multi-use trail along the north side of County Highway NN will be constructed, linking the city of Elkhorn with the government complex, Aurora Lakeland Medical Center and the White River Trail—which extends all the way into Racine County and the city of Burlington.
The county is coordinating this project with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, which will be replacing the U.S. Highway 12 bridge and reconstructing the County Highway NN interchange with U.S. Highway 12.
While only the bridge replacement and interchange reconstruction will be discussed at the Sept. 10 meeting, Walworth County will hold an additional public informational meeting for the County Highway NN project next spring after further planning and design has been completed.
