City could purchase land near fire station

JANESVILLE--The purchase of property at 618 Prospect Ave. would give the city of Janesville more flexibility in its options to renovate or build a new fire department headquarters, according to a city memo.

The property at 618 Prospect Ave. is behind fire station No. 1, which is located at 303 Milton Ave.

The plan commission will consider buying the property at its Tuesday meeting.

The city for years has talked about the need to build a new fire station.

One location mentioned in the past was the site of the ice area on Beloit Avenue. The city also has considered buying properties near Randall Street.

The property is 4,268 square feet with a 1,314-square-foot home and a one-car detached garage. The city would tear down the buildings, which Brian Schweigl, associate planner, describes as being in poor condition with no historical significance.

The home, built in about 1900, has been vacant for about a year.

The property adjoins and shares two property lines with the station, and the added land could help address space, safety and access needs at the station, Schweigl said.

The station was built in 1957 and needs upgrades and improvements, staff has said. The purchase would allow the city flexibility if it opts to leave the station in its current location.

The property could be used to widen the existing driveway on the backside of the station to improve access.

The sale is set to be approved by the Janesville City Council on Monday, Sept. 9, when the purchase price will be disclosed.
