A second-half goal was the difference as visiting Madison La Follette defeated Janesville Parker, 1-0, in a Big Eight Conference boys soccer match Thursday night.

Daniel Gutierrez scored at the 42:20 mark, which was all the Lancers needed.

“The goal was well-played on their part,” Parker coach Jason Bier said. “Obviously, it was not the way we wanted the game to end, but we played a complete game start to finish.

“We attacked well and had opportunities,” Bier said. “More than wins and losses, everybody had fun. If we play each game like this one, it will be a fun year.”

The Vikings, 0-1 in the Big Eight and 1-5 overall, play at Madison Memorial next Tuesday.

n East 4, Craig 2—A slow start doomed Janesville Craig's boys soccer team Thursday night.

Madison East scored four first-half goals, including a goal just 30 seconds into the game, and cruised to the win in the Big Eight Conference opener for both teams.

Craig (2-1-0, 0-1-1) got second-half goals from Drew Whitaker and Reyes Fernando but could not overcome the sluggish start. East led 3-0 after 20 minutes.

“I think East had a big advantage because they had already played nine games with scrimmages and such,” Craig coach Mike Hook. “But we have to be ready to play when we step on the field and we weren't tonight.”

Craig hosts Big Eight powerhouse Madison West on Tuesday.
