Mathews, Snappers sweep away LumberKings
BELOIT--Beloit busted out the brooms on Tuesday night.
Ryan Mathews went 2-for-3 with a home run and both runs scored as the Snappers topped the Clinton LumberKings 2-0 at Pohlman Field.
The victory wrapped up a four-game series sweep and helped the Snappers to their eighth victory in nine games. The spurt, following a six-game losing skid, helped Beloit get back to a .500 record in the second half of the Midwest League season.
Mathews led off the game with a double and scored on Chris Bostick’s single. Mathews then hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning.
Andres Avila scattered five walks and three hits over six innings to pick up the win. Tyler Vail got his sixth save.
Earlier on Tuesday, Snappers first baseman Matt Olson was named the Midwest League Player of the Week thanks to 10 extra-base hits—including five homers—last week.
The Snappers open their final home series of the season tonight at 7 p.m. against Burlington.
