Craig girls golf splits to open Big Eight season
SUN PRAIRIE--Dominic Wiegel has been pleased with Janesville Craig’s early-season numbers—in more ways than one.
Wiegel, the Cougars girls golf coach for nine years, has a record 17 players out for the team this season.
And after opening play in the Beloit scramble on Tuesday, Craig shot a team score of 426 in its first Big Eight Conference triangular on Wednesday.
“I was very pleased with the scores,” Wiegel said. “The only thing I had to go off was last year. Except for our No. 1, they probably all averaged 10 strokes better than last year. You just never really know until you get on the course.”
Host Sun Prairie won the event with a 396. Madison La Follette does not have enough players out to field a full team.
That’s not an anomaly in the Big Eight, which is why Wiegel feels fortunate about his numbers situation both now and going forward. The Cougars lost their Nos. 1 and 5 golfers from 2012, but return plenty of letterwinners.
Hayley Arneson is one of two senior captains and shot a team-best 103 on Wednesday.
“Her biggest challenge this year is going to be staying healthy,” Wiegel said, referencing a prior knee injury. “She’s got a pretty well-rounded game.”
Kelsey Hackett is the other captain.
“She put in a ton of hours on the course this summer and will be our most-improved golfer this year,” Wiegel said.
Senior Sarah Holford, the Cougars’ catcher during softball season, is a long hitter who rounds out the top three spots on the team.
The final two spots could see some rotation.
Sophomores Jorden Roscovius and Savanah Ryder filled out Craig’s five-player field on Tuesday. Juniors Maggie Stewart and Betsy Enis will also see time.
“We just want to keep having fun and keep improving,” Wiegel said. “We’d like to get some scores around that 400 number.”
