KENOSHA--The Janesville Craig girls tennis team opened its season with a 5-2 nonconference loss to Kenosha Indian Trail Academy on Monday.

Craig lost all four singles matches. Craig’s No. 1 singles player Kaylee Rossing, hindered by a hand injury lingering from softball season, took Emily States to a tiebreaking third set but lost it 13-11. In Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles, the Cougars could only muster a win in one game with Kristin Whitcomb taking one off Paige Kent in the first set of their No. 3 singles match.

The Cougars fared better in doubles play, winning the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. Sara Runde and Sierra Reese topped Lizzie Schlitz and Emma Geglierdi 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, and Carly McGrath and Abby Hughes beat Natalie Parrish and Keilee Dunker 6-4, 6-0.

Craig coach Bill Peyer said early mistakes cost his squad, but was pleased by this early-season result. Had his inexperienced team—only Rossing and the team of Runde and Reese played consistently on varsity last season—come through in its tiebreak opportunities in No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles, it would’ve won the meet 4-3.

Craig will be in action again this weekend, hosting 13 teams at its invitational tournament on the courts at Palmer Park on Friday and Saturday. Play begins at 8 a.m. both days. Big Foot, Milton and Janesville Parker are among the teams that will participate.
