JANESVILLE—Authorities entered not guilty pleas for a Brodhead woman accused of embezzling nearly $90,000 worth of forged checks from a Janesville church when she appeared at a hearing Wednesday.

Carrie A. Kolanda, 31, Brodhead, waived a preliminary hearing and stood mute to charges of forgery and theft in a business setting over $10,000, court records show. The court entered not guilty pleas for her.

An accountant discovered Kolanda forged 70 checks for herself, totaling $88,329, from two accounts when she was a secretary at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, according to court documents.

Kolanda admitted to church authorities that she stole the money, and her father has since repaid the church, police said.
