— Forget the regular season.

Janesville Parker's baseball team is all about the postseason.

The Vikings began the WIAA Division 1 tournament Tuesday with a 9-8 win over Madison Memorial at Riverside Park. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Memorial—the higher-seeded team—but was moved to Janesville when the Mansfield Stadium field was deemed unplayable.

Parker (7-17) plays at Madison West on Thursday for the regional title.

After losing twice to Memorial during the regular season, Parker exacted revenge by pounding out 13 hits against three Spartan pitchers. Collin Powers' sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth turned out to be the game-winning run.

"Without a doubt we're playing our best baseball of the season right now," Parker coach Brian Martin said. That's what the postseason is all about. It doesn't matter what your record was during the regular season."

Parker scored sevens runs in the second inning to take a 7-2 lead. The Vikings sent 11 batters to the plate. Will Theisen, who had three hits for Parker, had a two-run single to make it 7-2. Powers' two-run single gave Parker a 4-2 lead.

Memorial eventually tied the game at 7-all in the third. Parker took an 8-7 lead in the fourth on Theisen's RBI single, but Memorial answered in the bottom of the inning.

Logan Coulter led off the sixth for Parker with a triple and scored one out later on Powers' sacrifice fly.

Hunter Van Zandt picked up the win in relief. The freshman left-hander retired 11 of 12 batters he faced.

"Hunter was lights out," Martin said. "And if you throw out a couple of outings, that's how he has been all season."
