The UW-Whitewater football team continued to roll though the WIAC on Saturday with a 45-0 victory over host UW-Eau Claire to push its overall winning streak to 21 games.

The No. 1-ranked and Division III defending national champions Warhawks improve to 3-0 in the WIAC and 6-0 overall. The Blugolds fall to 1-2 in the WIAC and 3-3.

The shutout was the first for the Blugolds since Sept. 22, 2007. The previous one came at the hands of the Warhawks in a 27-0 loss at Whitewater. All-time the Warhawks have shut out the Blugolds nine times.

“We are doing good things, and continue to make strides,” Warhawk coach Lance Leipold said in a phone interview. “I was concerned about us coming back from a physical game against Stout.’’

Leipold didn’t have to worry about a thing.

Whitewater hammered Eau Claire in every category. The Warhawks made 25 first downs to Eau Claire’s six. Whitewater finished with 417 yards total offense while holding Eau Claire to 150 yards.

Whitewater ran 70 offensive plays to 49 for Eau Claire. The Warhawks controlled the ball for 35 minutes, 38 seconds to 24:22 for Eau Claire.

Matt McCulloch, Janesville Parker High graduate, made the defensive play of the game for Whitewater, returning an interception for 42 yards for a touchdown.

“It was funny,” Leipold said. “At halftime, I asked Matt if he’d had an interception this year. He said he had one. I said, ‘it’s about time you pick one and take it in for six.’’’

McCulloch picked off the Blugold’s Austin Neu and scored with 6 minutes, 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give the Warhawks a 38-0 lead.

Levell Coppage gained 110 yards on 18 carries, scoring on runs of 15 and 19 yards. Warhawks’ quarterback Matt Blanchard completed 18 of 26 passes for 170 yards and one touchdown.

Antwan Anderson scored on a 29-yard run with 18 second remaining in the third quarter for the final score of the game.

Whitewater will host UW-River Falls on Saturday.
