Sgt. Willie Abegglen retired Friday, Administrator Bob Museus said.

The town’s ad hoc law enforcement disciplinary committee was scheduled to meet Monday morning.

Abegglen’s retirement was not a surprise, Museus said.

“We always knew that was an option out on the table, but we were continuing to move forward with the disciplinary action,” Museus said.

Police Chief John Wilson filed non-criminal charges against Abegglen for violation of the department’s anti-harassment policies and insubordination during the resulting investigation.

“Mr. Abegglen’s conduct in this matter, especially in light of his prior disciplinary record, warrants the serious discipline of termination,” the charges state.

The charges come after two disciplinary suspensions in 2009, the documents state.

-- In June, Abegglen was suspended for three days without pay after he was accused of releasing confidential police information to a person who was the subject of an investigation.

He was deputy chief at the time of the information leak, according to documents the Gazette obtained through the Wisconsin Open Records Law.

Wilson received a letter of reprimand from Museus as a result of the same investigation, according to town records.

-- In July, Abegglen served another three-day suspension after violating the town’s anti-harassment policy, the document states.

The most recent charges filed by Wilson were for harassment of the same employee, the documents state.

Abegglen has “serious ill will” against the employee, Wilson and the town, the document states.
