Michael Spaulding Jr. and Kelsey Kennedy are at the top of their class in Janesville Craig High School athletics.

They were presented the American Legion Athletic Medal, the school’s highest interscholastic athletic honor, at the senior awards ceremony Thursday night.

Spaulding is the son of Michael and Pamela Spaulding. Kennedy is the daughter of Stephen and Karen Kennedy.

The annual Legion award, based on athletic participation and citizenship, has been presented in Janesville since 1922. It has gone to a male athlete at Craig and Parker each year since the school split in 1967, and this is its 23rd year as a coed award at each school.

It was presented Wednesday night to Tyler Teubert and Katherine Brossard at Parker.

Jillynn Mortensen immediately preceded Kennedy on the Craig girls honor roll. Spaulding follows Jo Jo Pregont as Craig’s 43rd male recipient.

Spaulding earned his Legion honor by winning 10 letters . He got four each in track and wrestling, along with two in football.

As the Cougars’ second-year captain, Spaulding placed third at 215 pounds in the Big Eight wrestling meet this past season. He also was a secondyear captain of the track and field team this spring.

After this season, Kennedy will have won four letters in soccer. She also won three in volleyball and two in basketball for career total of nine.

Kennedy was named Craig’s most valuable player in volleyball this past season. She also was a volleyball team captain as a junior and senior, soccer and basketball captain as a senior, and an All-Big Eight honorable-mention selection in basketball this school year.

Along with his Legion honor, Spaulding was cited as the school’s male nominee for the WIAA Scholar Athlete Award. Hailey Smith, daughter of Keith and Courtney Smith, was recognized as the female nominee for the WIAA Scholar Athlete Award, and received the Jeffrey C. Thomas Student Athlete Scholarship.
