Janesville police are warning the public of a possible scam targeting the elderly.

At 10:30 a.m. Thursday, an elderly woman, who lives on the west side of the city, had a male in his 20s or 30s identify himself as a water department employee.

After getting inside the house, he told the woman she overpaid her water bill and was owed a $40 credit.

“He showed a $100 bill and asked if she had any change,” said Sgt. Craig Klementz.

“She didn’t have the money so he didn’t get anything,’’ Klementz said.

Although the woman did not report the scam to police, her son did 12 hours later after she told him about the incident.

Anyone who is approached by this man, who was described as wearing a nice-looking T-shirt and pants, is asked to call police at (608) 755-3100.
