Unfortunately for Janesville Parker, the Purple Knights played four quarters worth of fast and didn’t stop until the final buzzer.

Leketreius Broomfield rolled up 29 points, and Jon Winston added 20 to help the second-place Purple Knights (11-2, 8-1) roll to an impressive 82-62 victory over Parker (6-6, 4-5) in a Big Eight Conference game here Saturday afternoon.

The Purple Knights’ inspired effort left Parker coach Ryan Masterson thoroughly impressed.

“You have to tip your hat to Beloit today,” Masterson said. “They played outstanding. It sounds crazy losing by 20, but we actually didn’t play that badly.”

Beloit coach Jay Bryant was equally impressed with his team.

“The first half was one of best halves of the year,” said Bryant, whose team moved within a half-game of Madison Memorial (8-0) in the conference race. “When we shoot the basketball like we did today, we’re pretty tough to beat.”

Having Broomfield doesn’t hurt, either. After the Vikings grabbed a 10-9 lead early in the first quarter, Broomfield took over with 13 points to help Beloit hold a 23-16 lead after the first eight minutes.

The rest of the Purple Knights followed Broomfield’s lead.

Winston then drained a pair of second-quarter three-pointers to push the Purple Knights’ lead to 35-18.

Parker answered with consecutive lay-ups from Andrew Somerville and Creed Knutson to pull within 35-22. Knutson paced the Vikings with 20 points overall, while Somerville finished with 11.

But the Vikings couldn’t draw any closer than that 13-point margin as the Purple Knights came right back with a quick 7-2 spurt to close out the half up 44-24.

“We were willing to run with them,” Masterson said. “And we had some open looks. But in the second quarter, we shot 3-for-14, and that was the killer.”

Knutson tried to revitalize the Vikings with 10 third-quarter points, but it just wasn’t enough to slow down Beloit.

Winston’s one-handed slam midway through the fourth quarter increased the lead to 77-47.

“Our defense creates our offense,” Bryant said. “And when we played great defense, it’s usually a good sign.”

The Vikings, behind a 15-5 run, trimmed the deficit back to 20, but it was too little too late.

“I told the guys after the game that we have to look at the big picture,” Masterson said. “If we play like we did today against a lot of other teams, we’re going to win. Beloit was just that good.”
