After a night of stranding runners, three walks brought in the two runs Janesville needed to beat Genoa City in a Class AAA American Legion regional opener Wednesday night at Riverside Park.

Tom Yaucher walked with the bases loaded to bring in the tying run, and Tanner Moe walked to bring in the winning run as Janesville defeated visiting Genoa City, 10-9, in 10 innings.

Janesville plays the Kenosha Merchants at 7 p.m. today in a second-round game at Riverside Park.

Janesville squandered a 6-2 lead against Genoa City. The winners had 17 hits and drew eight walks, but left 18 runners on.

“We hit up and down the lineup,” Janesville coach Bob Schenck said. “We just couldn’t drive guys in.”

Andy Kersten started for Janesville and pitched 7 2/3 innings. Kyle Johnson came on in the seventh and earned the win, allowing just one run on two hits.

“Johnson did a great job in relief,” Schenck said.

Janesville defeated the Merchants, 11-4, during the regular season, but Schenck said the Kenosha team was short-handed that night. The Merchants defeated Burlington, 19-9, Wednesday to advance to the second round.
