Allied Systems Holding, 544 Kellogg Ave., informed the state Department of Workforce Development that it plans to close its doors Feb. 26, 2010, leaving about 100 workers jobless.

Allied Systems was responsible for transporting GM’s sports utility vehicles out of the city. Allied employees trucked shipments of SUVs to dealerships around the Midwest or loaded them onto outbound rail cars.

This is the second significant job loss at Allied Holdings.

In October 2008, Allied Automotive Group, a division of Atlanta-based Allied Systems, notified the state it planned to lay off 117 employees Dec. 23, 2008—the same date many other local workers were laid off as a result of the Janesville GM plant closure.

Allied workers in this round of layoffs include 33 company drivers, 24 rail yard loaders, 10 rail dock workers and a variety of other positions.

DWD and its regional partner, the Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board, are providing rapid response services to affected workers. Dislocated workers can access job search and career planning assistance, resume assistance, job training and job search databases at the Rock County Job Center, 1900 Center Ave., Janesville.

The announcement comes about a week after the DWD announced Wisconsin’s unemployment rate for November was 7.8 percent, up 0.1 percent from October.
